Vega monument

Vegaplatsen is named after the Vega Monument, which was erected in connection with the polar year 1932–1933 in memory of Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld's research expedition with the ship Vega 1878-1880. The Vega expedition was the first to find and travel through the Northeast Passage, by sea north of Europe and Asia. The names of the members of the Vega expedition are engraved in the plinth of the monument. Nordenskiöld became professor of the Mineralogical Department of the Swedish Museum of Natural History in 1858. He died in 1901, the same year the decision was made to build the Natural History Museum's facility in Frescati. In 2016, Vegaplatsen was supplemented with a water-filled pond and water lilies. Thus, the place got the appearance that the archtitekt had originally drawn, but 100 years later. //nrm.se.
