The Forest Chapel

Source: Wikipedia and skogskyrkogarden.stockholm.se. The Forest Chapel, designed from 1917 to 1919 by Gunnar Asplund and inaugurated in 1920. In this simple wooden chapel with a pits roof, the national romantic features of the time are still visible. The forest chapel is well thought out to the smallest detail and contains many details and symbols. For example, the keyhole in the door is the eye of a skull that opens up to death. Also the forging gate contains many Christian symbols. The first altarpiece was painted by artist Gunnar Torhamn. After a theft, it has been replaced with a landscape painting specially designed for the Forest Chapel by artist Peter Fries:” Same Time Tomorrow”.
