The group Orfeus
Carl Milles begins to work seriously on the sculpture in 1935 and the end result was quite different from the proposal decided by the City Council. Above all, the whole composition changed through the advent of eight female and male figures floating in the water around Orpheus. The male figure who desperately raises his hands to the sky bears Beethoven's ancesis. This was no coincidence, Beethoven was for Milles the symbol of the great, suffering artist genius, whom he himself wanted to be. When the nine characters with Orpheus in the middle were likened to ”a sculptural equivalent” to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Milles is said to have been visibly delighted. //Wikipedia
