Långholmen prison

Långholmen's central prison was a prison in Stockholm, located on the island of Långholmen. The central prison had at most 500 cells for mainly male prisoners. The prison was built between 1874 and 1880 after Wilhelm Theodor Anckarsvärd's drawings. In 1972, the decommissioning began, which lasted until 1975, and in 1982 parts of the buildings were demolished. Today there are inns, hotels and hostels in the old Kronohäktet. Sweden's last execution took place at the prison. Guillotine was used for the first and last time in Sweden. It was Alfred Ander, a robber, who was decapitated on November 23, 1910.
