Central Post Office

Centralposthuset is a former post office in central Stockholm. The post office was built in the years 1899–1903; architects were Ferdinand Boberg (exterior and post hall) and Frans Gustaf Abraham Dahl (floor plan). Regarding the exterior of the Central Post Office, the Swedish Post Agency had invited five architects to an anonymous architectural competition in July 1897. Boberg's contribution with the motto "Now" was declared the winner in November of the same year. In 1935, the property became a national building monument. The facade construction gives certain associations to Vadstena Castle, which is not surprising as Boberg was very interested in medieval castles and for this particular post office he drew inspiration from Vadstena Castle, but the building is also characteristic of Boberg's pursuit of an independent and modern style. The granite plinth makes a smooth transition to the red sandstone of the ground floor, where deeply incised masonry openings form a powerful arcade, its columns carried forward as thin pilasters in the middle floor wall of dark red-yellow brick. The top floor is of öved sandstone and the softly rounded roof is clad in black slate. //Wikipedia
