"Farewell on the Polar Ice"

The researcher and meteorologist Finn Malmgren was during the 1920s on several polar expeditions, i.a. in 1928 he participated in the expedition on the zeppelin Italia under the leadership of Umberto Nobile. The airship plunged onto the ice, Malmgren survived the accident itself where several others died or disappeared, and those remaining fought for several weeks to reach help. The sculpture, which rests on an ice block-like plinth, shows Malmgren as he dies of exhaustion being cared for by some of those who would later be rescued, a month after the crash. Elsie Dahlberg-Sundberg, 1980, Hammarbyhöjden, Bronze.
